It’s been a month since the
first revival of the RTFF tookplace. The wait has been long for us. Excited film buffs finally got togetheron the 15
th Night for the second edition of the Chennai Rooftop FilmFestival. With Halloween almost close by, the Curator of this edition VijayVenkatramanan (
@vsnipz) decided to showcase Monster Movies. Now that’s a veryinteresting genre, most of us just wanted to figure out what kind of differentmovies can you screen on monsters. Does this genre even have so many varietiesapart from the Jurassic park to Godzillas? Well, Vijay was waiting to showcasethe varieties this genre can throw up.
But before we get to the proceedings of the day.. Errr..Night.. The response for the secondedition after the revival was fantastic. The Google group sign up form had morethan 100+ film buffs wanting to attend this edition that Vijay had to shortlistpeople and keep giving updates as to the attendee list. And as we started toshowcase our first film we were wanting for space. We had to jump acrosspeople, do a few twists and turns to find a spot to sit. The snap explains therest.
And yes, apart from that we got a little hi-tech this time.Violet 3D let us use their new concept which was fabulous. You need to visittheir site to learn about this technology, the sound was so amazing thatmonsters really made us shrivel. To add to the experience we had a HD projectorthat made viewing a pleasure.
So we kicked off with
The Host in the monster night.
AKorean flick that kind of proved to the world that not just Hollywood can makesuch movies. As Vijay who had the opportunity to talk to the director of thismovie put it “The Host is a monster movie that relies more on the drama aspectand the monster has been put in to give it a fright, a certain variety that isa first of its kind”. The Korean director had us in splits too with his leadcharacter. Not to mention some of the girls who screamed. Can’t wait for ahorror night! ;-)
Then stomachs started grumbling. A late night dinner wasordered and the guy who came to deliver kept giving me weird glances wondering whatthis bunch of 50 people are doing so late in the night. Well, he was the weird onein this lot that night
J.So after dinner we had one of the best times of the night.
Black Sheep wasscreened. A bunch of sheep in New Zealand who go crazy and started killingpeople. The movie had very very very gross moments that left us asking “So willyou ever eat Mutton again?” but also had us in splits. The sheep could scareyou and make you laugh. I guess that’s where direction comes in. And yes, thesheep did a lot of weird stuff too. You had to be us that night to hear themoans when the weirdness set in and the sheepish laughter. We loved watching itas a gang. The fun of watching movies as a gang was established without adoubt. And yes, Baaaaaaaaaaa !

Followed by
The Mist that was about how a mist sets in avillage and a monster hidden in it. A group of people who get held up in asupermarket and the various psychic thoughts that come to humans when hit byadversity. The climax moved us all. This flick was all about the payoff. And yes,not to mention the cheers that went up in the hall when the lady who claimedherself as the vessel of her religion got shot. Sometimes, you blend in with amovie and root for a particular victory or a defeat. Ah! Again, the joy of watchingmovies in a large group.
It was nearly 5:00 by now but guess what? The energy in theroom was still high. No one slept! We were waiting for the next and decided weshall watch a Norwegian movie “
TrollHunter”. This was a mocumentary styledmovie.
So when that got over we came toanother end of a wonderful night of movies and followed by questions of “SoWhens The Next RTFF?”
It just wasn’t talkinggood of the movies, we discussed the flaws in them and why they were showcasedas well. In totality, a brilliant night it was. As well, a lot of new faces werevisible who weren’t there in the last edition. That’s good news, the news isspreading. So this how you can do your bit if you loved the RTFF -
Blog / Tweet / FB / Tumblr / Glass.. Spoon.. etc etc whatevercommunicative way is there – Spread the word. Cinema is a passion for us. Maybewe should do two RTFF’s per month what say??? So when’s the next one?
