Farming thoughts

The farmers

move around their trees

navigating the gleaming office chairs with ease

 

Testing the soil’s moisture, its texture

sitting at a desk,

surrounded by dusty files

 

They plough on in loincloths

and with threadbare towels slung

on bare, brown shoulders

inside the smart, navy suits

 

making money to buy seeds

for weeding, for fertilizer

holding meetings in fake wood-tiled hotel suites

with expensive natural flower bouquets

 

while breathing in the roadside chembakams

as their fathers did, leaning on the oxen

while soliciting the client’s preferences at lunch 

 

They worry about the monsoon arriving late

while being on time

at the helm of office affairs 

 

Mislaid sons of the soil,

they work on long after sunset

thinking of the ripening plantains

and falling coconuts

within deadlines

drawn by money
