Watching The Grandmother

When David Lynch started with filmmaking – he was a painter, trying to capture moving images. That gives his films a unique aesthetic – and the core of that aesthetic principle is still present. The Grandmother has the minimalism that has become Lynch’s signature over the years – an economy of images, and sound effects instead of dialogues. The primal nature of The Grandmother is the very opposite of the industrial setting of Eraserhead, but it is easy to see the line connecting the two.

The Grandmother is about a kid who grows a grandmother to escape from his parents’ abuse. The atmosphere gets truly creepy, and dread seeps through even the happiest moments captured in this 30-odd minute film. The sound effects that Alan Splet and Lynch created once they were unsatisfied with the samples they already had – beautifully compliments the minimalist sensibilities of the filmmaker. The film isn’t about the narrative, rather it beautifully captures the intense emotions that only a child can experience, before experiences of life numb him down.

A great watch.
