A cliché thought hits in the morning: On news and news value, life and its ways

Author : Paromita Sharma      Blog :My Freedom of Expression      Date: 8/22/2012 11:33:00 AM

My newspaper guy has a strange problem. He will never bind the newspaper with a rubber band. Every morning I have to collect the scattered sheets spread all over the front yard! The crazy wind will do the rest to annoy me. It is just that, I am not being able to get up early enough to get hold of him :( Kisi din mil gaya na...!!!

Today morning, while collecting the sheets, my head got hit by the lower part of the staircase. I stopped there for few moments to enjoy the sparks and stars that appeared before my eyes (grrr!). This boy will get an additional good scolding for this hurt too! When I settled down to arrange the sheets...something caught my attention. A news, which was ruling the cover page for a week, now shifted its place to second page. I realized that all news have this fate... it’s life cycle...from being just below the masthead, slowly slipping into the inner pages, then to the side columns.

There is a strange similarity of this phenomenon with human lives as well as with the incidents that take place in the life span.

As we can see the same happening to the news and its value... all incidents that take place in this world do not have same news value. The information that are accumulated by news agencies, journalists and other sources, do not enjoy same fate, same amount of highlight. Maximum of those will be thrown to the dustbin/ recycle bin, some of those will be used as fillers, a few as niche news items for the niche readers...only one or two news item will grab the attention and will be given high value and most important place in the news paper...for the known reasons obviously.

Similarly, there are billions of lives that see the light of the Sun every day...breath same air, walk on the same earth...but each one of us have different kind of lives, different purposes, even no purpose... some make it large, some live it, some ruin it, some waste it in vain. Some lives are so valuable, some are so unimportant, even some lives are considered as parasites.

For those who make it large...like news items, it has its peak and then downfall…eventually some are forgotten, rarely one among many, becomes a legend…

In the same way, no matter how happy or sad incidences we experience in our lifetime, after a certain period, time pushes us to get up and move on. No matter how good or bad were the incidents, they become memories. That is how it is. Yes, there are certain incidents that remain there always, like a permanent scar or like an oasis in the desert, making their presence and effectiveness felt, every time touched somehow.

Life goes on, with or without, everything, something or nothing.  Like the news paper, life too, must go on…the ground rule of human life is... to be…to live.

This is a stupid thought, said thousand times earlier, known to all…but felt like saying again…

I will come back with some other observations/realizations/thoughts (may be stupid at times). Till then...
Keep the faith!
