Heaven on Earth – A journey through Shari'a Law by Sadakat Kadri

Author : Muqhtadir      Blog :Written Opinion      Date: 8/12/2012 6:08:00 AM

The book falls short of its supposed endeavour of informing readers about Sharia law. The book talks a lot but inform less and it is a classic case of well intention gone astray. The major setback in book is that book does not cover Sharia even minimally than comprehensively.

The book conceived incoherently and written incongruously. The inspiration for book is less charming – the serial bomb attacks in London prompted author to write this book. The suicide bombers inspired by Sharia took their own life granted for martyrdom and author took Sharia as granted as it did by suicide bombers that reader might know about Sharia.

Author intention remained untouched intention nothing can be written about it till intention surface out in action. Author writes “Fiery preachers and random Muslim youths were making all sorts of bellicose assertion about 'the Sharia'. People who wanted to be angry with them were assuming that the Sharia meant what they said. Noise rather than information, was rushing to fill void, while critical questions were going not only unanswered, but unasked.”

But in book as a both naïve and intelligent reader you wont find many critical inquiry in to Sharia. I am still trying to muster what critical inquiry intended to be done.

My problem with book is that it is ill conceived. The chapters are written in zig-zag way. You do not know what author wants to convey. Sometimes you will start question yourself what am I supposed to do with book. Either you should drop book in mid way or try to read as a devout reader no matter whether you are connecting with previous paragraphs or not.

The book has two part one named as 'the past' other is 'the present'. The book title and parts names are well thought but the words of book neither intensify your reading speed nor increase your intellectual curiosity.

The author is handicapped by his own notion of Sharia. When you read book you feel that Sharia is only about fornication, adultery, apostasy, blasphemy and other well circulated issue in media. The author at the beginning set the path for his book but never walks on it.

The book is per se not a bad book it becomes tasteless due to the fact that it does not match to its own saying of informing about Sharia comprehensively.
