An Army Colonel has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 26-year-old pregnant woman. He was arrested from the Jabalpur Training Centre on Wednesday. Colonel Amardeep Singh, resident of Mulaheda village in Gurgaon, was court martialled by the Army and later handed over to the police, said ACP (Sadar) Rajeev Yadav.
He was produced in the district court on Thursday and sent in 4-day police remand.
The body of Sohna resident Rekha was found in Ghata village, Sector 56, on May 19.
The face of the victim – who was 8 weeks pregnant – had been smashed with a blunt object and there were cut marks on her neck. Rekha was staying in a paying guest accommodation in Sukhrali.
A case was registered on the statement of Chattar Singh, resident of Sector 54. The police also recovered a knife from the crime scene.
Following investigation, the police apprehended 32-year-old Ramji Yadav, working with the Signal Regiment, from the Army Headquarters on May 26. Colonel Amardeep’s driver Umesh, hailing from UP, was also subsequently nabbed.
Police officials said during interrogation, Ramji Yadav confessed that he was in a relationship with Rekha and she had become pregnant. He further alleged that the deceased had been pressuring him to marry her.
Irked at this, accused Yadav hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Rekha. Meanwhile, the police had also recovered the Tata Safari used in the crime on May 27. The car was traced to its owner Colonel Amardeep Singh. However, fearing action, Amardeep had fled the country.
