Reading The Hunger Games

I picked up The Hunger Games wanting an easy read – and nothing more. And did I get more! Reading The Hunger Games, I felt no fantasy has moved me this much since The Lord of the Rings. Its not the depiction of severe poverty, starvation or oppression, but the depiction of little rebellions that affect you the most – those rebellions close the circle precipitating the catharsis. Much like the rain in Bergman's The Virgin Spring.

The book is based in a post-apocalyptic world whose post-war treaty derives from Greek mythology. 12 districts that lost the war have to send 2 tributes to an annual extravaganza – The Hunger Games, where you fight to death till one winner emerges.

Well, I love the gore – but here isn't much of that. But when a twelve year old is killed, it hurts. And, when the heroine decides to honor the dead – decorating her with flowers, tears rolled down my eyes, something only one other book has managed to do.

Showing that the Capitol can be defeated, she unwittingly sparks off what could be an uprising. Already got the sequels, waiting to see if the series maintains the intensity. A real lot happens in very few pages, I rarely like the books to be filled with action – but loved this one!

A great read.
