When space is a constraint and for people who are rarely at home for a sit-down dinner, it does not make sense to have an elaborate dining space. It can just as easily be accommodated in a cafe style setting within the living room.
That's what I have done with this space. The walls have a cladding of tiles which have a slight shimmer to them. Even though they are dark tiles, the shimmer gives the room a sense of shifting space.
Large windows which let in a lot of light during the day are an added advantage.
Contemporary furniture goes best with small spaces. Clean straight lines and curves, materials like chrome, glass and solid colored upholstery help the visual flow. No piece of furniture stands out on its own to hog the limelight in the room... (this again helps to make the room look larger than it is)
A hint of playfulness is added with the circular carpet stuck on the floor like floating lily-pads forming a path across to the study.
