Writing about India on Bloomberg View

Author : Chandrahas      Blog :The Middle Stage      Date: 3/25/2012 11:26:00 AM

If I haven't been able to post as much on The Middle Stage in the past year as I used to, it's because some of those energies have been taken up by a weekly column on Indian affairs for Bloomberg View. Over time, I've come to enjoy this work enormously, especially since it gives me an opportunity to test out and refine, in real time, ideas and opinions I've developed through my reading, my travels and conversations with friends, and my increased access in Delhi to intelligent thinking about India. I try also to quote other points of view from across the Indian political and ideological spectrum that I find instructive or revealing.

Here are some of the pieces I've enjoyed writing the most: on how The Times of India is destroying (has destroyed?) Indian journalism (here is an interview on the same issue); on Dinesh Trivedi's recent railway budget and the consequences thereof; on Swami Vivekananda and his appearance at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893; on Subramanian Swamy and his recent incendiary comments about Indian Muslims; on the tenth anniversary of the Godhra violence in Gujarat; on the marvels of India's census; on the debates about the setting of the poverty line in India; on the phenemenon of "paid news" in Indian journalism; on the BMC elections in Mumbai; on the upcoming Murty Classical Library of Indian literature, and on the beauty and diversity of Indian calendars.
