Boond (www.boond.net) creates entrepreneurs who sell and service development products like solar lamps (home systems), water filters, efficient cooking stoves, dynamo lamps and mosquito nets in remote rural areas or areas affected by calamities (floods etc.). The products are aimed at providing the poor with access to adequate lighting, clean water, efficient cooking and pest control, thereby improving their productivity and health. In order to successfully overcome the last mile of bringing these products to India's rural communities, Boond trains young people in becoming entrepreneurs to sell and service these development products. These products are borne out of direct needs and the consumers are assured of quality and after-sales service ensuring trust and loyalty. Creative designing of the products, smart packaging and long lasting partnerships also contribute towards low cost and a long life of the products.
Since all the sales and servicing is done through rural entrepreneurs, Boond also provides livelihood to the rural unemployed while at the same time ensuring that clients are well trained on how to use development goods to reduce their vulnerability to diseases and increase their productivity.
Our vision is to make rural India more entrepreneurial and sustainable, economically, socially as well as environmentally while ensuring that innovation and developments happening in cities and the western countries reach the places that need them the most.
Till date, we have impacted the lives of over 10,000 people in 5+ districts in four states of India, but our goal is to grow pan India with 10 distribution points within the next year. Boond is based on a sustainable model with incentives for everyone working for a common cause. The products are of high quality and are designed for rough rural use.
We have about 20 entrepreneurs who have successfully completed this project and are hoping to grow this number to 100 by the end of the year.
Times Now's program Amazing Indians profiles Boond and Rustam Sengupta. Set in Luk, a village in the tehsil of Kotra (district Udaipur) in Rajasthan, it has been produced by Ms. Anushree Bhoumik from Times Now.
