Salaam Paris Author : Hema Blog :TELL A STORY - MY WAY Date: 12/1/2011 2:03:00 PM Tanaya shah, the 19 year old Muslim girl, is dreading about her marriage to one Mr.Tariq Khan, which would quite become the turning point of her life. She thinks about all the things that she is yet to achieve in her otherwise ordinary life. She dreams of being the "Sabrina" Audrey Hepburn living life to the fullest. She escape to Paris on the pretext of meeting Tariq before their engagement, to know and understand each other. But she tries to become free from beneath her grandfather's thumb, before being passed on to beneath a husband's thumb. She arrives at her distant relatives house, the relationship that has been revived just for her visit to Paris. Fate has it that she gets the bad influence from the distant cousin Shazia who talks her into staying in Paris despite the threat of her family disowning her.She later copes with the life in Paris and lands herself a job as a cashier in a cafe. On one eventful night, she turns from a cashier to a waitress to a model. Having tasted her first stint at modelling, she is hungry for more. She becomes a super model eventually. Being the stunning beauty that she is, takes her to the top, but her haunting sadness provokes more guilt making her life miserable and lonely. But she nevertheless sticks to her religious beliefs and never goes out of the way to achieve stardom. She simply takes whatever comes her way and leads her life, till her manager and PR decides to make a charade of her with a rock star (who is gay). Life goes on till she bumps into Tariq again. One day Tariq meets her bearing a disasterous news about her grandfather and Tanaya makes plans to visit her family and reconcile with them. She reveals all about her life and the charade and falls in love with the guy whom she was meant to marry in the first place. Everything falls in place until Tariq returns with bad news and a big drama continues. Will Tanaya ever return to that normal life? Will she find her true love and settle in life? Will the truth about her father change her decisions about her career?Kavita Daswani has written a story that etches the character of a sweet innocent girl on her journey to her fabulous stardom. She covers each bit of the character, her understanding of her family, the typical teen madness and the lessons learnt the hard way in a manner that copes gradually with the story. The names of the designers, the way the fashion industry works were no better to me than to that naive girl (Tanaya) from India. But she ensures to give a slightly brief explanation to them. Kavita has done her homework for Salaam Paris about the fashion industry and the odd ways it works. She has tried to give a uniqueness to the Character Tanaya, making her not blend in the crowd of models. Salaam Paris was a entertaining read, giving you striking contrast of Paris and Mumbai, the beliefs of a teenager and an adult, and the consequences faced when not put in the right hands. Nevertheless, the ending being the same which Tanaya dreaded in the beginning, but gradually fell in love with.
