Simply Fondue - A New Concept

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 5/18/2013 8:43:00 AM

'Fondue is something that is not very well known in India and is mostly limited to buffets of 5 star hotels and some of the cafes though in much lesser scale. I personally have tried them couple of times at Mocha in Delhi and once at Cafe Moshe in Mumbai. Liked the concept, however never quite got the hang of it. From Wikipedia - Fondue is a Swiss, French, and Italian dish of melted cheese served in a communal pot (caquelon) over a portable stove (réchaud), and eaten by dip(...)'

'BUTTER CHICKEN HUNT RESULTS(Conducted by DGC - Delhi Gourmet Club)After sampling 13 restaurants across Delhi, and spending more than Rs 13,000 each jury member (because we followed the old-fashioned tasting panel rule of ordering the dish being tested at the end of an entire meal, rather than tasting only that dish and nothing else), the jury has concluded that INVITATION, Ashok Vihar, and MUGHAL MAHAL, Rajendra Place, are joint winners of the Certificate of Excellence. Their b(...)'

'ROLLMAALLocation - 28-A, Below Cafe Mocha, Def Col Market, New DelhiType - Fast Food. Self Service. Kaathi RollsThe decor is very unconventional. Lights (inadequate & dim for the type of outlet) are made of old (waste) metal 'Bhompu Type' loud speakers, seats made with concrete slabs, partitioning done with waste tin barrels & containers, use of worn out glass, air con system matching stained to look old etc. It might appear funky in first look but appears cheap in prolonged(...)'

'Stone ice-cream or Cold Stone ice-cream seems to be new phenomenon or trend catching up in Delhi and other Indian cities. On the first look it might not look like much, but then thinking about it its a great way to eat and treat your ice-cream.To simplify things It can also be referred to as Teppanyaki style Ice-cream, the griddle in this case is cold instead of hot. So now there is a cold stone or slab or a mixing board, which remains at -17 'C. The ice-cream is put on it(...)'

Giving a 'Marwadi Tadka' to Delhi

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 4/8/2013 1:03:00 PM

'I was at Netaji Subhash Place this noon to meet friend and was looking around at the food joints and what all options were there for food lovers. Lot of joints selling Pasta, Pao Bhaji, Chinese, Rolls etc, besides the usual suspects in such large commercial hubs : Pizza Hut, Domino's, Haldiram's, Subway, so on and so forth. Nothing seemed to fancy my attention and excite the hunger in me. We were walking towards Haldiram when we noticed a banner announcing a food outl(...)'

Indian Coffee House - A Thriving Relic

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 4/1/2013 5:24:00 AM

'When I used to read or hear about Indian Coffee House, it always came across as a place that was dead and some old timers (read retired men) used to hang out there as the coffee was cheap, location perfect and no one gave a damn. With that kind of impression, I never dared to enter inside, fearing that I might face another government relic and then you do not really go out get frustrated and have bad service and food. However off-late the name star(...)'

'Vada Pav is something that has no footing in Delhi at all, and its almost impossible to find one except for very few places in Delhi. So when I heard that Goli Vada Pav No.1 is opening their shutter in Delhi, I got very excited about it as had heard a lot about them from my friends who keep travelling to Mumbai and Bangalore. Being a franchise based model I was not expecting the Mumbai street taste in them, however still was looking forward to their offerings as something is be(...)'

'On my recent trip to Amritsar, I got acquainted to charms of dishes made on the Tawa. Though I have been eating them before, however for the first really understood the concept of it. The concept which is very simple, you take meat in any form primarily - Muttom Chaamp, Mutton Seekh, Gurde, Bheja etc and you fry in on Tawa with thick gravy and loads of butter/ghee/oil and eat with Kulcha or other bread. The kulcha itself is heated on tawa and soaked in the gravy of the ite(...)'

'Poori Chhole is something which is very close to my heart, for me they are food for my soul. Last year when we went to Amritsar for our food trip, we ate them at Kanha Sweets and couple of morsels inside me, I proclaimed them the best I have had till date. However life is not always about the best, and I am someone who would appreciate some of the lesser known mortals too and give them a fair chance to compete for my taste buds and very valuable appetite. So when a dear friend and f(...)'

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 2/22/2013 8:14:00 AM

'Murthal has been on food scene of Delhi/NCR for quite some time. The Tandoori paranthe served in the area being part of legends and folklore now. For those unaware, its a place near Sonepat, around 40-60 km drive North of Delhi on NH1. The variation in distance depend on where you actually start from in Delhi/NCR. Parantha with homemade white from SukhdevAnd going against the popular choice and trend, I have never been a fan of any of the Dhabas famous in the area. I always found th(...)'

'Watching western movies and realizing how strong the cafe and bar culture overseas is, I always try to find places in India which serve tea and provide avenue for locals to ‘hangout’ and enjoy a quick bite. There are not many which I have found yet, however Giani Tea Shop of Amritsar seems to be one such place. The place is on a busy Amritsari road, gets as Old School, Desi and Rustic as it can get. Probably not the cleanest or most well managed place where you would let your foot i(...)'

Where to eat Amritsari Kulcha in Amritsar? - Food Trippin'

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 2/20/2013 2:33:00 PM

'As legendary as Amritsari Kulcha is, it is something that we Dilliwalas hardly understand. Not many of us know the real taste, texture or even the idea of one. People confuse it with Stuffed Naan or Parantha all the time, when the fact is that those two type of breads are completely different from genuine Amritsari Kulcha. Amritsari Kulcha’s dough is made in a special way, with layers and then stuffed with Aloo, Gobhi, Paneer etc. It is flaky, crispy and is served with Chhol(...)'

Sardar Ji ke Amritsari Naan/Kulche - Pitampura Court Waale

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 2/14/2013 12:05:00 PM

'Every other food enthusiast in Delhi would have a nomination for the best naans in the city. My elusive search for the best naans ended with discovery of this small Pitampura shop, in which I now have a contender. One day while I was on routine visit to my worksite in Haiderpur, I found an otherwise inconspicuous corner of Pitampura liven up with a small happy crowd. Supposedly, a Sardarji had shifted his naan shop from Pitampura court to this place, and hence the ensuing swarm of D(...)'

The Golconda Bowl - Hyderabadi Delight in Delhi

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 2/14/2013 10:48:00 AM

'I visited The Golconda Bowl last Sunday (10th February). We were three of us, me along with my mother and my wife. The experience was just superb and I can’t explain it without going into hyperbole so I won’t even try.We started off with the Patthar ke Gosht. It has to be one of the best starters I have ever tasted. It was different and full of flavor. We must have polished it off in 5 minutes flat. The manager walked up to us and, much to our embarrassment, said the portions might (...)'

'Watching Anthony Bourdain's adventures in Kerala the other day, I felt a serious desire to visit God's own country once again and savor all the delicacies they have to offer. However since there is no justice in this world and I am not Anthony Bourdain, I cannot be in Kerala anytime soon - so I decided to satisfy my cravings by visiting some Malabari/Kerala style food joint in Delhi itself.Like all other big metro cities of the world, Delhi has its own cultural pockets. Punjab Grill - Winter Menu Tasting

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 1/23/2013 1:11:00 PM

'Punjab Grill is a upmarket restaurant with backing of Jiggs and Zoravar Kalra, names unknown to street food lovers like me, however they do strike a major chord with food lovers in general. Besides that the restaurant itself it quite a known name and gets regular mentions in conversations about North Indian food in Delhi.  So when I got an invite from them to sample their winter menu, I kind of jumped on it as I had never been there before and was quite to try it. Though as a r(...)'

The hotels would start from 2k, the cheapest I managed to fin(...)'

Cafe 27 - Bar & Kitchen - A Royal Blunder

Author : Shashank      Blog : Food Enthusiasts of Delhi (FED)      Date : 10/28/2012 8:48:00 AM

'I am not someone who talks about bad experiences, however there are times when things go overboard and some experiences really end up spoiling the mood and feel-good feeling you have about the world in general. And when that happens two times in the same evening at the same cafe? You got to be kidding me. Cafe 27 finally manages to get a blog post out of me after several months in hiding and probably my first rant ever. You walk onto the bar, ask the bartender for a drink, the barte(...)'
