True Bhagya! I have experienced all those days personally. Somehow, my faith is not as strong as yours and so I cannot place myself in someone else's hands. But, I try to derive strength from within, from happy memories and from supportive shoulders.

You make a very valid point, Bhagya. First of all, it is necessary to curb our own consumption. And secondly it is important to donate. But, that does not mean giving away torn, tattered or stuff that cannot be used. My maid regularly took my kids' clothes for her grandchildren and was very grateful for them. I even gave her my used working washing machine and a computer for her son in 9th standard. Charity is something that makes both the giver and the taker feel good. But, it must(...)

I am dismayed that crime has become so common and that there is no deterrent for these monsters. And this problem has so many angles -- mindset change, law and order, swifter justice, sensitization of police and society and many more.

I have felt the disillusionment as well. But there are so many more positive people than the negative. And it makes more sense to dwell in the good than the bad. I agree with the philosophy. My blog is always about me and what I want to write and feature. It is never about readership or the number of comments though I am grateful for everyone who reads what I write and interact with me. Well a punishment never solved a problem. A sensitive police force, an attitude that does not blame the woman or think of her as an object to be played or used, a swift judicial process coupled with stringent punishment will all go a long way in helping. And, that would require an all around change beginning with the attitude. In Bangalore I don't drive beyond 9 pm. I have faced numerous leching, intimidation incidents along with groping. I am sick to the gills with the "checking ou(...)

I have a problem with the mentality that says that my indignation is genuine and yours is cacophony! I maintain that every voice spoken against an evil even if on social media adds to the collective outrage and that mobilized both the media and the government to do something. But beyond the outrage, real solutions must be looked at. One of them as you rightly pointed out is teaching our sons from their childhood. More than teaching, it actually flows down from our own behavior that (...)

I am a huge sari fan! You wear a very normal sari yet it beats the shit out of all other garments. No, I drape the sari pretty well without much skin show ;-). And yes, I also can't wear it on a regular basis but do it for festivals and special occasions. You are right about the inconvenience, but I found that the more I wear it, the better I get at handling it.Have you noticed that the Indian sari suits every female body type from the skinniest to the fattest. I remember when I named my elder son, Siddharth, I loved it a lot. The name has become so popular that there is another Sid in his class, one in my younger son's class and you will find them crawling out of woodwork if you yell Sid, Siddhu or Siddharth :). And here they build subways that are stinky, scary and a definite threat to women. Just a few days back, a woman was knocked down while crossing a busy road. She did not use the subway early morning because she was scared of unsocial elements. I really wonder who decides about these and then ensures that they are safe to use.

I work from home though that has its own issues but commute is not one of them. How about renting a place close to your place of work. Here in Bangalore, people put their own houses on rent and find a rented place close to their workplace. It is a nightmare on the roads here, and we don't have Metro yet :(. I really hate driving in such crazy traffic conditions :(.

I shudder to use public toilets in India. I genuinely prefer Indian toilets in public places. Ugh, the miseries I've witnessed. Train and airplane toilets are the worst. Sometimes, the obnoxious smell that lingers can put a person in an instant coma. Once, a lady was happily passing gas errr.. politicians inside a rest room. It was so funny that I started giggling loudly. Other women also started laughing. You should have seen her face when she came out :).

It happened very naturally when he was curious why birds lay eggs every month. And, I went very naturally from birds to women and then gently inserted why we use sanitary napkins. There was no embarrassment. More often, it is in our own mind than elsewhere, don't you agree!
